Report
SUMMARY OF COMMISSION ACTION
The Parks and Recreation Commission considered this item on January 8, 2025.

The Parks and Recreation Commission voted to approve the park name for the new City Park at 1142 Dahlia Court (Corn Palace). The name Corn Palace Park was voted unanimously as the recommended name for the new park by the Parks and Recreation Commission.

The vote was 5-0.

While Council Policy 7.3.23 on the Naming and Renaming of Parks and Recreation facilities calls for the Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) to review any name considerations and make a recommendation to City Council Prior, staff also sought input from the Heritage Preservation Commission and the Human Relations Commission in December 2024 prior to the PRC's review. During these presentations staff asked for feedback regarding their top two choices for park names.

The Heritage Preservation Commission's most common preferred name was Corn Palace Park, with 4 of the 5 commissioners having selected that as their first choice (Attachment 4). Three commissioners also listed Maize Park as a second choice.

The Human Relations Commission's preferred names as expressed by Commissioners were Manzanita Park and Acorn Park (Attachment 5). All four commissioners chose Manzanita Park as their first choice and three selected Acorn Park as their second choice.
