SUMMARY OF COMMISSION ACTION

The Parks and Recreation Commission considered this item on June 14, 2017.  

 

The Parks and Recreation Commission voted to recommend City Council approve Alternatives 1 and 3:  1) Approve the Concept of Constructing an Inclusive Playground at Fair Oaks Park; 3) Authorize the City Manager to Execute an Agreement Between the Magical Bridge Foundation and the City of Sunnyvale for Design and Construction Services Related to the Playground. The vote was 4-0 with Commissioner Alexander absent (Attachment 6 - Excerpt of the Draft PRC meeting minutes)

 

Staff presented a report to the Commission and provided overview information on the Magical Bridge Foundation (MBF), all-inclusive playgrounds and how the Magical Bridge Playground would be tied in to the overall Fair Oaks Park renovation.  Key elements of the agreement were highlighted and funding mechanisms were explained.

 

Jill Asher, Co-Founder of MBF, spoke to the Commission in greater detail explaining what an all-inclusive playground is, how it benefits our community and the success of the Magical Bridge Playground in Palo Alto, CA.

 

Staff with support from Jill Asher responded to questions from the Commission related to non-profit status, mission, funding, all-inclusive play and the all-inclusive playground’s location within Fair Oaks Park.

 

PUBLIC CONTACT

Public contact was made by posting the Council agenda on the City's official-notice bulletin board outside City Hall, at the Sunnyvale Senior Center, Community Center and Department of Public Safety; and by making the agenda and report available at the Sunnyvale Public Library, the Office of the City Clerk and on the City's website.

 

ALTERNATIVES                     

1.                     Approve the Concept of Constructing an Inclusive Playground at Fair Oaks Park.

2.                     Do Not Approve the Concept of Constructing an Inclusive Playground at Fair Oaks Park.

3.                     Authorize the City Manager to Execute an Agreement Between Magical Bridge Foundation and the City of Sunnyvale in the amount of $1,800,000 for Design and Construction Services Related to the Playground.

4.                     Do Not Authorize the City Manager to Execute an Agreement Between Magical Bridge Foundation and the City of Sunnyvale in the amount of $1,800,000 for Design and Construction Services Related to the Playground. 

5.                     Direct Staff to Explore Other Options Recommended by Council.
