Places installations and maintenance, a preview of Art in the Park, planning for
Hands on the Arts 2025, and a look ahead at future Art in Public Places efforts.
B
Provide Input for Annual Boards and Commissions Study
Session
Chair Veith invited commissioners to discuss potential suggestions for the upcoming
Boards and Commissions Study Issue process. The ideas generated will be
revisited at the November Council meeting, where chairs and vice chairs will have
the opportunity to present them to the City Council on behalf of their respective
commissions.
No suggestions were offered. Chair Veith closed the item and proceeded to the next
agenda item.
ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
Valerie, an in-person member of the public, provided a presentation on the SNAIL
community’s request for snail-themed public art to be included in the upcoming
Columbia Park playground replacement.
Commissioners asked questions of Valerie and staff regarding the current state of
public art at Columbia Park, the timeline for the playground replacement, and
whether funding for public art is included in the project budget.
Valerie noted that there are currently no art installations at Columbia Park and that
the playground replacement has been postponed to 2027. Staff also shared that
they have not yet been informed whether public art is planned for the renovation but
will follow up with the Department of Public Works, as the project falls under that
department’s purview.
Staff noted that there are opportunities for both the community and the commission
to participate in the Columbia Park renovation process. If public art is included in the
project, staff can guide selected artists to incorporate community-preferred themes.
Additionally, when forming the artist selection jury, staff can include members of the
surrounding community to ensure local input is represented in the process.
