2020 Census Data and Implications for Sunnyvale
Redistricting
Ms. Guzmán announced that the 2020 census data was now available and that the
final data shows Sunnyvale's population grew to about 16,000, but that the
distribution was not even throughout the districts with District 2 as the largest district
and District 3 the smallest district.
Ms.Guzmán informed the group that based on the data, Sunnyvale’s district lines
will need to be redrawn to achieve population equality.
Shalice Tilton of NDC presented and explained Sunnyvale’s official census data.
Commissioner Brenchley commented that it appears District 5 can remain the same.
Chair Davis opened the floor to questions.
Commissioner Salas arrived at 6:14 p.m.
Commissioner Salas requested information regarding deviation from the last
census.
The Commission continued discussion of data sets and communities of interest.
Ms. Guzmán shared that most important criteria under federal law is population
equality.
Chair Davis asked for confirmation from Ms. Guzmán whether the Commission's
goal is to minimize the number of people who will miss a voting cycle and Ms.
Guzmán confirmed this is Council’s direction to the Redistricting Commission.
The Commission further discussed the various districts and population of each
district.
Ms. Guzmán confirmed that the maps made in recent meetings would be processed
with the census data and if NDC identifies any imbalance, it will be flagged for the
Commission.
Ms. Tilton suggested that the Commission enter maps into new mapping tool
